Breastfeeding & Newborn Care Counseling

Breastfeeding & Newborn Care Counseling

The first few weeks after birth are among the most transformative — and often the most challenging — for new parents. Dr. Vannala Raju offers dedicated breastfeeding and newborn care counseling to help families navigate this precious period with confidence, backed by evidence-based guidance and compassionate support.

Breastfeeding provides unmatched immunity benefits, optimal nutrition, and emotional bonding. Yet many mothers face real challenges — from latch difficulties to concerns about milk supply. Dr. Raju and the care team are here to help you succeed.

Breastfeeding Support Services

  • Latch Assessment & Correction: Hands-on evaluation of positioning and attachment to ensure effective milk transfer and prevent nipple pain.
  • Milk Supply Concerns: Distinguishing perceived low supply from true insufficient milk; guidance on demand feeding, pumping, and galactagogues where appropriate.
  • Engorgement & Blocked Ducts: Relief techniques and early mastitis recognition and treatment.
  • Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia): Assessment of posterior and anterior tongue-tie affecting latch; referral for frenotomy when clinically indicated.
  • Expressing & Storing Breast Milk: Safe pumping schedules, storage guidelines (room temperature / refrigerator / freezer), and re-warming techniques.
  • Formula Supplementation Guidance: When supplementation is medically necessary, advising on appropriate formulas and amounts without compromising breastfeeding goals.

Newborn Care Counseling — The First 40 Days

  • Cord Stump Care: Keeping the stump dry and clean; recognising signs of omphalitis (infection).
  • Safe Sleep Practices: Back-to-sleep positioning, firm mattress, room-sharing without bed-sharing — SIDS prevention guidance.
  • Neonatal Jaundice Home Monitoring: Checking skin and eye colour, feeding frequency, and when to call the doctor.
  • Newborn Screening Tests: Guidance on mandatory newborn screening for metabolic disorders (thyroid, PKU, etc.) and hearing screening (OAE).
  • Normal vs. Abnormal Findings: What is normal — milia, mongolian spots, physiological weight loss, periodic breathing — vs. what needs medical attention.
  • Vaccination Schedule: BCG, Hepatitis B, OPV at birth; complete immunisation schedule planning from Day 0.

Dr. Raju believes informed parents are empowered parents. Every session ends with a written home-care plan and a clear list of warning signs — so you always know when to rest easy and when to seek help.
